Auf nach Wales
26 Züchterinnen und Züchter aus dem Zuchtgebiet Hannover sowie aus weiteren Verbänden: Weser-Ems, Westfalen, Thüringen, Schweiz, traten Mitte Juli gut vorbereitet die einwöchige Exkursion nach Wales zur Royal Welsh Show an. Der Besuch auf dem Schaugelände war wieder sehr beeindruckend. Auf der größten Agrarmesse Europas, mit über 10.000 ausgestellten Nutz- und Gebrauchstieren, davon ca. 1.600 Welsh-Ponys, fanden in diesem Jahr mehrere Weltmeisterschaften, so z. B. im Schafscheren, statt. Die Schauklassen der Welsh-Ponys wurden wieder im großen Stadion durchgeführt. Leider regnete es am ersten Tag. Dadurch war der Platz sehr aufgeweicht und ein optimales Vorstellen der Ponys nicht gewährleistet. Festzustellen war, dass mehrere Klassen nicht voll besetzt waren (z. B. bei den älteren B-Stuten waren von 20 gemeldeten Stuten nur 10 Tiere am Start). Die teilweise knappen Starterzahlen waren sicherlich nicht ausschließlich auf das regnerische Wetter zurückzuführen. Hier bleibt Raum für weitere Gedanken. Herausstellen möchte ich den Siegerhengst der Sek. C: Nebo Bouncing Rocket von Nebo Bouncer, a. d. Nebo Rachel, aus der Zucht und im Besitz von Owen Jones (Nebo Stud). Ein kapitaler C-Hengst, der seine Rasse nicht besser verkörpern kann. Positiv festzuhalten ist noch, dass man seitens der Verantwortlichen das Verkehrssystem geändert hat und es dadurch weder zu Staus auf der Straße noch vor den Eingängen kam. Die Schauergebnisse sind an anderer Stelle im Jahrbuch aufgeführt. Daß man sich auf der Royal Welsh Show fast schon ein wenig heimisch fühlt, liegt wohl an den zahlreichen Reisen dorthin, der herzlichen Aufnahme im Internationalen Pavillon und den vielen Welsh-Freunden aus Deutschland, die sich jedes Mal dort einfinden.
Hafdre Stud Hill Ponys Sek. A:
Bei den Gestütsbesuchen wurde zunächst das Gestüt von Roger Davies (südwestlich von Builth Wells) besucht. Ein Geheimtipp von Henk van Dijk, der sich auszahlte. Der urwüchsige Gestütsbesitzer verfügt über mehrere Herden Hill-Ponys, die auf weit voneinander entfernten Hügeln weideten. Seine Ponys waren fast ausschließlich in der begehrten Rappfarbe und mit sichtlich kräftigem Fundament ausgestattet. Besonders auffällig zeigte sich der A-Hengst Hafdre King Cole mit guter Nachzucht. Die monumentale und schroffe Bergwelt in dieser Region hinterließ bei den Besuchern einen besonderen Eindruck.
Abergavenny Stud Sek. D:
Anschließend wurde das Cobgestüt von Familie Batt, das am Rande der Stadt Abergavenny liegt, angesteuert. Der Berichterstatter hatte die ehrenvolle Aufgabe, gemeinsam mit John Batt 2006 die IG Bundesschau zu richten und war dadurch mit der Familie gut bekannt. Der Bestand umfasst ca. 40 Tiere von außerordentlicher Qualität. Die Stutenherde hinterließ einen sehr gleichmäßigen und ausgeglichenen Eindruck. Die beiden Stammhengste Pennal Calon Lan und Trevallion Picasso wurden an der Hand vorgestellt. Ebenfalls die braune Stute Abergavenny Viscountess, die auf der Royal Welsh Show in einer großen und stark besetzten Klasse einen überzeugenden 3. Platz belegte. Sie führte ein Stutfohlen von Trevallion Telynor`s Prince bei Fuß, das ebenfalls einen vorderen Platz belegte. Der Vater von Pennal Calon Lan, Tynged Calon Lan, wirkte viele Jahre im Gestüt von Familie Kalvelage.
Dukeshill Stud Sek. A:
Das auch bei uns bekannte Dukeshill Gestüt (Nachzucht befindet sich u. a. bei Familie Labbus) hatte in diesem Jahr keine Ponys zum Schaugelände entsandt. Es wurde sehr offen bekundet, dass die diesjährigen Richter andere Schwerpunkte setzen würden und man es deshalb vorgezogen habe, der Schau fernzubleiben. Kathy und Joanna Sheil stellten uns daher den früheren Royal-Welsh-Champion Dukeshill Magnum vor, der einige Jahre in Holland wirkte. Weitere Jungtiere wurden noch an der Hand vorgestellt und anschließend die Stutenherde besichtigt. Von dem diesjährigen Fohlenjahrgang war erstaunlicherweise bereits ein Teil verkauft!
Hill Ponys:
Auf der Nebenstrecke, südlich von Builth Wells über Upper Chapel, dort wo es keine Einzäunungen mehr gibt und man über ein großes Gitter fahren muß, um in die Bergwelt zu gelangen, ist es möglich mit etwas Glück, Hill Ponys zu entdecken. Wir hatten das Glück!!! Direkt an der Straße befand sich eine kleine Gruppe von ca. 15 Mountain Ponys. Die meisten Stuten führten ein Fohlen bei Fuß. Die Ponys waren wahrscheinlich Menschenhand gewöhnt, da sich die Reisegruppe sehr dicht herantasten konnte. Im Tal und an einigen Hängen konnten noch weitere einzeln grasende Tiere erspäht werden. Diese Begegnung war für alle ein sehr einmaliges Erlebnis.
Eyarth Stud Sek. B:
Das Eyarth Gestüt befindet sich im Norden von Wales. Zahlreiche namenhafte Hengste (z. B. Eyarth Rio, Eyarth Celebration) sind bei Jess und Joe Perry geboren. Zurzeit wirkt hier der Outcross-Hengst Hilin Etifedd (von Carwed Charmer). Stuten und Fohlen waren von besonders hoher Qualität und fielen durch das kräftige Fundament bei hoher Typausstrahlung auf. Einige Fohlen waren bereits ins Ausland verkauft. Die vielen Erfolge und die hohe Qualität der Ponys sind wohl auch darauf zurückzuführen, dass man nicht nur im eigenen Bestand selektiert, sondern auch von Zeit zu Zeit andere Linien (Hilin, Weston, Lemonshill) integriert hat. Ein Großteil der Zuchtstuten hatten Eyarth Celebration zum Vater, der im November 2009 verstarb. Nachkommen von Celebration sind auch in Deutschland und Holland stark vertreten.
Anri Stud Sek. B:
Letztes Reiseziel war das B-Gestüt von Anna Lloyd in Nannerch, Nordwales. Eine zahlenmäßig kleinere Zuchtstätte, die auf dem Kontinent noch nicht sehr bekannt ist, dafür aber in Wales auf Schauen bereits beachtliche Erfolge vorweisen kann. Anri Mimosa (von Griashall Kiwi) wurde 2006 auf der RWS Klassensiegerin. Sie hatte ein qualitätvolles Stutfohlen vom Gestütshengst Boston Braveheart bei Fuß. Besucherliebling war aber eindeutig ein Dunkelfuchs Stutfohlen (von Boston Braveheart a. d. Lemonshill Plover) mit heller Mähne, Blesse und 4 gleichhoch weißen Beinen, das an Typ, Ausstrahlung und Gangvermögen nicht qualitätvoller hätte sein können. Leider war es auch gegen Höchstgebot unverkäuflich. Das Anri Gestüt ist sicherlich ein Geheimtipp für alle Welsh-B-Züchter.
Die zahlreichen und ausgesprochen qualitätvollen Welsh-Ponys sowie die sehr gastfreundschaftliche Aufnahme auf den Gestüten werden bei allen in besonderer Erinnerung bleiben.

Off to Wales
German Welsh breeders on tour
24 Welsh-pony breeders from Northern Germany, and two guests from Switzerland, were well prepared for the on week-long trip to Wales for the Royal Welsh show, and some very interesting studs, in July. Visiting the show area was very impressing again. At the largest agricultural show in Europe, with more than 10.000 issued commercial and use animals, including 1.600 Welsh ponies, several world championships, like sheep shearing, took place this year. The show classes of Welsh ponies were proceeded in the big stadium again. Unfortunately it rained the first day. Thereby, the place was very soaked and an optimal presentation of the ponies wasn’t guaranteed.
In spite of everything the quality of the presented ponies and cobs was eminent again. The party from Germany was greeted very kindly by Dr. Wynne Davies. To spot in a very positive way was, that the traffic system was improved by the responsible persons and thereby, tailbacks were avoided right from the start. The show results are listed elsewhere in this book. Feeling almost a little at “home” at the Royal Welsh Show might be because of the several trips there, the friendly reception in the International Pavilion, the warmhearted welcome by Dr. Davies and all the Welsh friends from Germany and other parts of Europe, who are united by the love of the Welsh pony and gather there at the same time.
Hafdre Hill Ponies(A)
The first visited stud was the Roger Davies’ in the south-west of Builth Wells. A tip from Henk van Dijk, which was very good. The stud owner owns several herds of “Hill Ponies” , grazing on the numerous hills. His ponies were equipped almost exclusively in the coveted black colour and obviously strong legs. Particularly striking was the Welsh A stallion Hafdre Jinks by Friars Golden Boy with good breeding. The monumental and rugged mountains in the region left a special impression on the visitors.
Abergavenny(D)
Then the cob-stud of family Batt, located on the outskirts of Abergavenny, was visited. The reporter had the honour to judge the national Welsh show in Germany with John Batt in 2006, and thus was well acquainted with the family. The actual stock enfolded about 40 animals of exceptional quality. The broodmare band has left a very even and balanced impression. The two stallions, Pennal Calon Lan and Trevallion Picasso, were introduced by hand. Also, the brown mare Abergavenny Viscountess, which occupied a strong third place in a large and dense class at the Royal Welsh Show. She had a foal by Trevallion Telynor `s Prince at foot. The sire of Pennal Calon Lan, Tynged Calon Lan, was in the stud of the kleine Kalvelage family in Germany, for many years.
Dukeshill(A)
The also in Germany well-known Dukeshill stud (ponies can be seen at the Labbus family in Germany) hadn’t sent ponies to the show this year, so we had the chance to admire the whole stock. Kathy and Joanna Sheil introduced the former Royal Welsh champion Dukeshill Magnum to us, who was in the Netherlands 2006. Subsequently we visited the herd of mares, after several foals were presented in hand. Most of the 10 foals were the offspring of DH Magnum. Some foals were by DH King`s Ransom and DH Pepe and DH Darcy. Mares and foals were very true to type and of excellent quality.
Hill Ponies(A)
On the branch line, in the south of Builth Wells to Upper Chapel, where are no fences and you have to drive over a large grid to reach the mountains, with some luck it is possible to discover Hill Ponies. We were lucky! Right on the road was a small group of Welsh Mountain Ponies. One mare had a foal at foot. The ponies were probably used to human hands, because the travel group could get quite close. In the valley and on some hillsides further grazing animals were spotted. This meeting was a very unique experience for everybody.
Eyarth(B)
The Eyarth stud is located in the north of Wales. Many well-established stallions (eg Eyarth Rio, Eyarth Celebration) are born with Jess and Joe Parry. Currently the outcross stallion Hilin Etifedd by Carwed Charmer is in use here. Mares and foals were of very high quality, and striked by the strong foundation and race typical charisma. Some foals have already been sold abroad. The many successes and the high quality of the ponies are probably due to the fact that they select not only in their own stock, but have also integrated other lines from time to time (Hilin, Weston, Lemonshill). Most of the mares are sired by Eyarth Celebration, who died in November 2009. Descendants of Celebration are also well represented in Germany and the Netherlands.
Anri(B)
Last destination was the B-stud of Anna Lloyd at Nannerch, North Wales. A numerically small stud, which is still not well known on the continent, but already has considerable success at shows in Wales. Anri Mimosa by Griashall Kiwi was class winner at the RWS in 2006. She had a foal by the great quality stallion Boston Braveheart at foot. The visitors` favourite was a chestnut foal by Boston Braveheart out of Lemonshill Plover with lighter mane, blaze and four white legs that in type, charisma and pace could not have been better. Unfortunately it was not for sale. The Anri stud is certainly a tip for all Welsh B breeders.
The numerous Welsh ponies of very good quality and the very hospitable reception at the studs will stay in a special memory for all of us.
